Dr. Girinath M R is a highly experienced Cardiac Surgeon based in Chennai, India. With 45 years of experience, he currently serves as a Consultant at Apollo Hospitals on Greams Road. Dr. Girinath has been the Head of the Cardiac Surgery unit at Apollo Hospitals since 1984, overseeing a team that has successfully completed 40,000 heart operations, including 29,000 coronary bypass operations and 14,000 beating heart surgeries.
He is a pioneer in congenital heart surgery and heart valve surgery in India, having trained 30 heart surgeons in the country. Dr. Girinath has performed over 25,000 open heart surgeries in the last 16 years and was one of the first surgeons in India to receive an MCh degree. He has presented over 275 papers at national and international conferences and has received numerous orations, including the Subroto Memorial Oration and the Sadasivan Oration.
Dr. Girinath was also part of the first multi-organ transplant in India and was the first surgeon to repair a complex congenital heart defect in a child under one year. His special interests include Congenital Heart Surgery, Heart Valve Surgery, Coronary Bypass Surgery, Multivalve Replacement, Cardiac Transplantation, Coronary Angioplasty, and Pacemaker Implantation. Dr. Girinath is a member of prestigious groups such as FRACS (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Melbourne) and F.L.A.C.S. (Fellow of the Indian Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery).
