Brief About Dr. R. P. Soonawala
Dr. R.P. Soonawala, also known as Dr. Rustom P Soonawala, is a highly experienced gynecologist and obstetrician based in Mumbai, India. With over 44 years of practice, he has been recognized for his outstanding contributions in the field of Family Planning, receiving the prestigious Padma Shri award from the President of India. Dr. Soonawala specializes in the treatment of various conditions such as cervical dysplasia, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), urinary incontinence, uterine fibroids, and post-hysterectomy prolapse.
His impressive academic background includes an MBBS, MD in obstetrics and gynecology, FRCS in obstetrics and gynecology from the Royal College of Surgeons, England, FRCOG from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, UK, and FICOG from the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Rustom is the founding president of the Indian Society of Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy, serves as the honorary medical director of the Family Planning Association of India, and is a member of the WHO Expert Panel of Female Sterilization. Notably, he is the designer of the Soonawala Intrauterine Contraceptive Device, developed in 1963.
Throughout his career, Dr. Soonawala has received numerous accolades, including the Von Graffenberg Medal for Intra-Uterine Contraception from the University of Kiel, West Germany, the GIANTS INTERNATIONALS AWARD for excellence in the Medical Field in 2000, the RASHTRIYA SAMMAN from the Income Tax Department for being the highest taxpayer during the Assessment years 1995-96 to 1999-2000, 2002, recognition from the LABHSETWAR FOUNDATION, USA for his contributions to Population Control and Family Planning, and the 42nd DHANVANTARI AWARD in 2014. Dr. Soonawala’s special interests lie in the treatment of cervical dysplasia, PCOS, urinary incontinence, uterine fibroids, and post-hysterectomy prolapse.
