He earned a D.M. (Gastroenterology) from AIIMS, New Delhi in 1983 and an M.B.B.S. from Govt. Medical College, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 1977. M.D. (General Medicine) from AIIMS, New Delhi in 1981; visiting fellowship in ERCP at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA in 1993.  Additionally, he received the top spot in the Final Professional M.B.B.S.
