About Dr. Somar Darweesh
Dr. Somar Darweesh is a Syrian board-certified specialist in ophthalmology and surgery with extensive experience in the field. He completed his MBBS from Damascus Medical College in 2007 and graduated in ophthalmology in 2011 from Ibn Al-Nafees Eye Surgical Hospital, Syria’s largest specialized training center.
From 2011 to 2013, Dr. Somar pursued a two-year fellowship in oculoplastic surgery. Between 2014 and 2020, he worked as a supervising specialist at an eye surgical hospital, honing his expertise in various ophthalmic procedures. In 2018, he made history by performing Syria’s first artificial corneal transplant (keratoprosthesis).
Dr. Somar Darweesh joined Al Rawda Hospital, one of the leading medical institutions in Damascus, from 2016 to 2024. During his tenure, he received in-depth training in the medical and surgical management of retinal and vitreous conditions, as well as in keratoplasty (PKP, DALK, KPro). He has also contributed to the field as a speaker at various international ophthalmic conferences.
