Breast Cancer in Young Women: A Growing Concern

Breast cancer is often known to affect mostly older women, but younger women under the age of 40 are also at risk. Among all the cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women globally.

While breast cancer is less common in younger women, it can be more aggressive and harder to detect. With awareness, early detection, and proactive care, we can empower young women to take charge of their health and improve outcomes.

Breast cancer accounts for about 25.4% of all cancer cases and is also the leading cause of death in 103 countries, including India.

Causes of Breast Cancer in Young Women

Breast cancer in young women is rare yet can be developed by early genetic mutations in certain genes. BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are known as tumour suppressor genes, i.e., responsible for controlling the growth of the cells. If mutated, they initiate the uncontrolled growth of the cells, hence can cause breast cancer.

If you have a mutation in the genes like TP53, PTEN, STK11, PALB2 and CDH1, then you’re also at risk of early onset of breast cancer.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer in Young Women

The symptoms of breast cancer in young women are similar to those of older patients. These include,

  • Breast pain (mastalgia)
  • Lump in the breast or either on the armpit
  • Inverted nipples
  • Nipple discharge (with or without pain)
  • Thickening and swelling of breast skin
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Redness, dimpling or skin rash in breast skin

If you’re having any of the above symptoms, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Risk Factors of Breast Cancer in Young Women

If you have a family history of breast cancer or certain other cancers, you may be at higher risk. These include if you have family members with

  • Breast cancer before 50,
  • any prostate, ovarian, or pancreatic cancer at any age, or
  • even triple-negative breast cancer.

Other risk factors may include,

  • Early gene mutations,
  • previous radiation therapy in the chest, or
  • have precancerous breast conditions, like atypical hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS).

What is the difference about breast cancer in young women?

Breast cancer in young women (under 40) does differ from older patients; these include,

  • More aggressive and grow faster
  • Different cancer types, like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and HER2-positive are possible
  • Difficult to treat.
  • Treatment may affect your physical conditions, like fertility.

Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Young Women

First, the doctor will physically examine your breasts to see if you have any lumps. Later, they will ask you about any symptoms, your family history, and your health factors. Further imaging tests like mammograms, ultrasounds, or biopsies may be performed if necessary.
