Liver cancer is becoming a more common cause of death around the world. Battling with liver cancer can be very challenging physically and mentally. India houses a team of expert oncologists, surgeons, interventional radiologists, and hepatologists, who are dedicated to providing the best course of treatment to the patients. Early recognition of the symptoms and immediate medical attention have several advantages. If you experience any of the symptoms, you may seek medical help straight away. You will have a broad range of choices for liver cancer treatment in India.

Usually, patients consider having liver cancer treatment in India as the country is renowned for providing excellent healthcare. In addition to that, the cost of liver cancer treatment in India is very affordable as compared to certain countries. This makes it more attractive as a destination for liver cancer treatment.

What Is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer is also referred to as hepatocellular cancer. In liver cancer, the tumor usually originates from the liver itself. If the tumors originate first in the other organs such as the pancreas, kidney, colon, etc., and later spread into the liver, it is called metastatic liver cancer. Liver cancer is classified into different types and stages based on the size and location of the tumor. You will be provided with multiple therapeutic approaches if you consider having a liver cancer treatment in India.

There are five stages of liver cancer, starting from stage 0 – stage IV. The stage of the disease at diagnosis determines the prognosis for liver cancer. Compared to late-stage liver cancer, early-stage liver cancer has a far better prognosis. But, keep in mind that even the late stage liver cancer can be cured and managed.

If you are having liver cancer treatment in India, your oncologist will give you a personalized treatment depending on the stage and the prognosis of your liver cancer. The best course of treatment will be selected for you as per the result of your diagnosis.

What Are The Types of Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer is broadly classified into primary and secondary liver cancer. There are more subtypes under these categories.

Primary liver cancer – The cancer develops in the liver organ itself. It is further classified into:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) – It almost always occurs in people having a chronic liver disease. It is the most prevalent form of liver cancer, the sixth most common type of cancer overall, and the third most common cause of cancer-related death globally.
  • Fibrolamellar HCC – This is a rare type of liver cancer. It usually affects people between the ages of 20 and 40.
  • Angiosarcoma – It develops in the lining of blood vessels and lymph vessels of the liver. It is usually discovered only at an advanced stage.
  • Hepatoblastoma – The tumor develops in the liver cells and this cancer is very common in children.
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma – The cancer develops from the bile ducts of the liver.

Secondary liver cancer – The cancer develops first in another organ such as the lungs, kidneys, breasts, colon, pancreas, etc. and later it metastasizes/spreads into the liver. Because of this, it is also referred to as metastatic liver cancer. According to research, all these types of liver cancer are demonstrated to have a chance of recurrence.

Liver Cancer Treatment in India

There are various techniques for treating liver cancer. Common methods used for liver cancer treatment in India are:

Surgery: It is the most common method used for treating liver cancer. There are two main types; liver transplant and partial hepatectomy.

  • Liver transplant – The entire liver will be replaced with a new healthy organ obtained from a deceased donor.
  • Partial hepatectomy – The tumor in the liver will be removed along with the healthy tissue surrounding it.

Radiotherapy: To shrink the tumors, a high beam of energy, obtained from sources such as X-ray and proton is carefully directed towards the liver tumor, protecting the surrounding healthy tissue.

During the process, you will lie down on a table,  and the machine will aim an energy beam at a specific location on your body. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a specialized form of radiation therapy that involves simultaneously focusing multiple radiation beams at one specific point on your body.

Chemotherapy: It is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells or to prevent their multiplications. The drugs can be administered through oral route or intravenous route.

Immunotherapy: Cancer cells have the ability to hide from the immune system, so the body’s natural defense cannot destroy them. Using immunotherapy, the immune system can be made to be able to find and kill cancer cells. This technique is very helpful for treating patients with advanced stages of liver cancer.

Apart from those common approaches, there are several localized treatment options available for patients having liver cancer treatment in India. This includes

  • Cryoablation – freezing of the cancer cells.
  • Thermal ablation – heating of the cancer cells.
  • Transarterial radioembolization (TARE).
  • Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE).
  • Alcohol injection into the tumor.

You will be provided with different options for liver cancer treatment in India at a much more affordable price than in other countries.
