Established in 1889, both the hospital and its affiliated medical school are recognized as the pioneering institutions of modern American medicine, giving rise to various esteemed medical practices such as rounds, residents, and house staff.
Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s premier hospitals and medical establishments, Johns Hopkins Hospital has consistently held the distinction of being the best overall hospital in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report for an impressive 21 consecutive years, spanning from 1991 to 2020. In the 2019-2020 edition of the report, the hospital was ranked first in Maryland and third nationally, trailing behind the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Notably, the hospital has maintained its position among the top five hospitals in the nation for 32 consecutive years as of 2021.
