In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Procedure, Preparation & Risks

In-Vitro Fertilization is an assisted reproductive technique that the experts perform carefully in the laboratory. The technique is advisable in case the couples are unable to conceive. It is one such effective technique that ensures fertilization by the means of scientific methods and procedures.IVF treatment in India is widely performed in renowned hospitals and laboratory centers. It has given new hope to infertile couples. Though the technique can be quite costly, it ensures a positive result.

What does IVF Mean?

IVF stands for In-Vitro Fertilization. The IVF procedure is a scientific technique in which the doctors extract the mature sperm and egg from the parents’ bodies. They then fuse the gametes with the help of needles by observing through the microscope. The gametes after fusion are kept under optimal temperature and then transferred to the mother’s uterus.

The technique uses both medications and surgical procedures for fertilization through scientific means.

Why IVF is Important?

IVF is the most effective scientific technique to deal with infertility. The doctors usually recommend it when other less susceptible techniques fail to bring the result. The doctors explain the following conditions in which the IVF can be the optimal solution:

Uterine Fibroid – The fibroid is the type of benign tumor that occurs mostly in women around their 30s or 40s. Since fibroids occur in the uterus, they can interrupt the fertilization process.

Ovulation Disorders – Ovulation disorders occur when there aren’t enough ovaries present at the time of fertilization.

Fallopian Tube Damage or Blockage – The fallopian tube is the place where the ovaries reside. The blockage and damage prevent the ovary from fertilization by blocking its pathway.

Endometriosis – Endometriosis is the condition in which the endothelial cells that line the uterus, grow outside of it, thereby disturbing the function of the uterus, ovary, and fallopian tube.

IVF Procedure – The expert level doctors are able to perform complex procedures. It is a 4-5 step procedure that may take around 6 to 8 weeks its complete. Following are the steps of the procedure:

Ovarian Stimulation – Hormones like FSH and LH stimulate ovarian growth and release, hence, the doctors will provide the injection to stimulate the hormone and will determine your hormonal and menstrual cycle.

After examining the cycle, the doctors will provide certain medications or injections for stimulating ovarian production. Such treatment ensures more than one egg production.

Egg Retrieval – The doctors then retrieve eggs by inserting the needle into the follicles through the vagina. This procedure takes place when you will be under sedation so you will not feel any pain. After retrieving the eggs the doctor will visualize it under the microscope to determine the potential eggs that can undergo fertilization.

Sperm Retrieval – The doctor tells the male member for collecting the semen sample for sperm retrieval. The centers have separate rooms available. In case of queries and concerns, experts are there to answer your queries.

Fertilization – The fertilization procedure takes place in one of the two ways which can depend on multiple conditions. The first type of method is conventional insemination in which both the mixtures of egg and sperm incubate overnight.

The other method is the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection in which the expert doctor directly inserts a single healthy sperm into the ovary. The procedure is observed under the microscope.

Embryo Development and Transfer – The embryo takes some time its develop. Once the embryo reaches the stage of being implanted, the doctor will insert the long thin tube into the vagina and place the embryo inside the uterus with the help of a syringe. While your doctor will perform this technique, you will be under sedation.

Diagnosis – After two weeks the doctor will diagnose the hormone level via a blood test. This can determine positive pregnancy.

How to Prepare for IVF?

The first thing you can do is to prepare yourself mentally, do not take stress, talk to your partner and trust your doctor. Before the procedure starts, you should do the following:

  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • Reduce caffeine intake
  • Improve your sleep cycle
