TAVI or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation is done to improve the blood flow in the heart by replacing an aortic valve that doesn’t open fully. Foreign patients prefer to come for TAVI surgery in India as the treatment here in India is far more affordable when compared to their native countries and they can save up to 30-40% of the cost. Moreover, India has the best cardiac specialists and surgeons who are well-known for their work and experience in their field.

Brief About TAVI

The procedure known as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) involves the use of a catheter, a long narrow tube, to implant an aortic valve. Typically, the catheter is inserted either through a small incision in the chest or into a large blood vessel in the groin.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is also referred to as Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Both terms describe the same procedure, with no distinction between them. However, TAVI is the more commonly used term in the UK, while TAVR is preferred in the USA.

Who May Need TAVI Surgery?

If an individual is diagnosed with aortic stenosis, it means that their aortic valve is not opening completely. The aortic valve is crucial in ensuring the proper flow of blood through the heart. It opens to allow blood to move from the heart to the aorta, which is responsible for supplying the body with oxygenated blood. In cases of severe aortic stenosis, a valve replacement may be necessary.

Initially, TAVI was employed as a substitute for open heart surgery in individuals who were deemed unfit for aortic valve replacement. However, recent studies have demonstrated that TAVI is equally efficacious as heart valve surgery after a year, prompting its utilization in individuals with a lower risk of surgical complications. Although TAVI exhibits promising results over an extended duration, further research is imperative before it can be considered the primary option for patients suffering from severe aortic stenosis.

TAVI Surgery in India

Before undergoing TAVI surgery in India a patient will do some tests. The test can include: a blood test, ECG, CT scan, coronary angiogram, TOE, chest X-ray, and breathing test.

Procedure

TAVI procedure typically lasts between one to two hours, although it may extend longer in certain situations. You will generally remain conscious throughout the procedure and will receive sedation and a local anesthetic. In rare cases, you may be placed under general anesthetic.

  • Patients will be instructed not to consume food or beverages for four to six hours before the TAVI procedure, the patient will change into a hospital gown and will be asked to remove any jewelry that could interfere.
  • During the TAVI, the patient will typically be awake and lying on their back. A sedative will be administered to help the patient relax. A local anesthetic injection will be given to ensure that the patient does not experience any pain in the upper leg or under the collarbone. A catheter will then be inserted into the artery through the numbed area.
  • The catheter will be guided into the opening in the aortic valve, and a new valve, composed of metal and animal tissue, will be positioned inside the old valve. The new valve will either expand on its own or a balloon at the end of the catheter may be inflated to create space for the new valve.
  • Throughout the procedure, a healthcare team will closely monitor the patient. The patient will be connected to a heart monitor to track the heart rate and rhythm, and an oxygen level monitor will be attached to the patient’s finger. Blood pressure will also be regularly checked.
  • Some individuals may feel pressure during the TAVI. If you experience any discomfort or chest pain, do not hesitate to inform the medical team.
  • Once the procedure is completed, the catheter will be removed, which may result in minor bleeding. The patient will then return to the recovery room and later be transferred to the ward.
  • Typically, patients are discharged from the hospital after one or two days, although discharge times can vary for each individual.
